I have some very old pine trees. I've planted hostas, they are doing ok, not great but they are growing. Also tried bleeding heart, that didn't do good. Any advice appreciated. Would really like a ground cover of some kind, hate the weeds that grow there.

not too much pines put chemicals in the ground to deter other plants or trees so that they got the place to them selves, you usually find mush rooms under pines.

what i usually do with difficult forrest floor is ,to fench some pigs in ,and they turn up the soil and make it ready for anything else, maybe try sweet potatoe depends on your climate ,you dont speak about that.

you can hide your secret things under the old pine tree. as it is very old tree then no body will notice anything what is under it. or u can keep ur oving things under it which u don't want to show anybody

Unless the ground is damp which is not likely below pine trees, then Hostas will not be happy. There is a reduced choice of plants as in the wild, very little grows beneath a stand of pine trees due to lack of light and water.

In situations such as this I would always recommend a raised bed in which you can plant most things depending on how much sunlight you get in that area.

If your looking for a ground cover for the shade. Try Ajuga. It will grow anywhere.

Azeleas will do great and they have beautiful blooms each spring and stay green all winter. (if you live where there are winters) set them about 4 feet apart and mulch them with pine needles or other forms of mulch...Look on line how to care for them.

Hastas. Of any variation. They love the shade and are extreamly hearty.
