My arborist who no longer lives in the area mentioned a product that attaches to roots of trees and helps the roots absorb water and nutrients (sort of like a sponge) from the surrounding area. I guess it is a liquid spray, but I am not sure, and cannot find it just through googling it.

First contact the landscape Installer and inform them of the problem. Trying to repair it yourself, you could loose your warranty. Or give them an excuse not to replace them. Take photos of the base of the trees to prove that they were planted too deep. When cedars are planted too deep for a few weeks, usually they are already dead, and just hanging on for life. The top roots and trunk must be exposed to air, no soil at all on top of them. When first installed, a tree well is placed around the tree to hold water, as they are watered with a hose, this soil from the tree well will erode onto to root system and around the base. It should be removed after watering. If not, it chokes the root system from getting the required oxygen needed to survive.

To answer your question about the product your arborist spoke of it is called Terra-sorb http://www.google.com/search?q=alkalinity+increaser&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&client=safari#hl=en&gs_nf=1&ds=sh&pq=terrasorb&cp=6&gs_id=18&xhr=t&q=terra-sorb&pf=p&sclient=tablet-gws&client=safari&tbo=d&tbm=shop&oq=terra-sorb&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&fp=c6c242ad89741d07&biw=768&bih=946

Hi there, i'm not sure about a liquid spray, but you could mix 25% perlite in with your soil. this provides great drainage, helps the roots to get water and air from the soil and stops the soil compacting and suffocating the roots. Also perlite is a neutral ph so it won't affect the acidity etc of your soil. After you've done that then any tree fertiliser should be fine for them. Hope thats some help for you :)

I think what you may be looking for is a surfactant, or wetting agent. Basically it makes water wetter. It will help the fertilizer absorb better in to the roots. It is used in many applications, insecticide, pesticide and many other things you wouldn't think of. Detergent is a type of surfactant. Google surfactant and fertilizer, maybe you can find what you are looking for there. Or check out Wikipedia for more info. Hope this help.

Also make who ever planted your trees reimburse you for all your trouble. Hopefully they have a guarantee.

Fertilizing stressed plants is usually a very bad idea.

You cannot FORCE a plant to recover.

Water absorbing products are not really fertilizers, though.

In some countries, human sewage is used for agrocultural purposes. That might work.
