I know that I am going to have to tile at least twice to break up my soil... but I have a HUGE front yard that is currently ALL weeds. I want grass this year. So I need some advice. I dont know all the breads of weeds... it is like a field. I am sure their is crabgrass, there is a lot of moss (which makes not a lot of sense since the yard is in full sun... isn't moss a damp area thing?), a lot of the weeks are hard and sharp... dont know if that tells you anything.

Anyway the entire lawn is this. So what is the best and least expensive way to kill this stuff? Just something like weed be gone or Scotts Weed Killer??? I dont really have any plants yet to save... and then ones I do I can protect.... I have to protect the roots right?

So then my steps would be to weed kill.... till the yard... fertalize and then till again?

Then I plant the grass seed, which I just sprinkle on the dirt or do I brush it in?

Sorry for the multi long questions. I do appreciate your help tremendously! Thank you.

Wow. Big project. So if you want to do this yourself and as cheaply as possible, I think you need to start by cutting the lawn as short as possible to chop down the vegetation. If you turn a whole bunch of vegetation into the ground, it will rot and the gasses can harm any new grass you've planted.

Then buy a big thing of Roundup (or the generic equivalent). And spray the whole lawn. It will kill everything. Then you have to wait 3 weeks or something for it to dissipate. In the mean time, you should either till the lawn or put about a layer of top soil over everything.

Then you can plant. Putting down new sod would be ideal, but that would also be pretty expensive. So just throw down a whole bunch of seed and water thoroughly. Keep it moist for several days and don't mow your new lawn for the first time until it is so long that the blades start to lay down on themselves. You want to let the roots get established enought that they won't just get ripped out when you mow.

EDIT: Till the yard once. After killing the weeds. You can fertilize (or not) at any time.

When you plant the grass seed, you can just sprinkle it on top. Ideally, you would then cover it with a thin layer of compost (to help it establish deep roots and to hide it from the birds). But you don't have to do that.

I'm recommeding that you use a good deal of top soil and/'or compost. Here's a good tip for saving money: find a horse farm in your area and ask if they have "well rotted" manure to give away. They usually do. You can just pull up in a truck and take all you want for free.

Ok use Round-up to kill existing plant life. Wait a week or whatever the recommended time is. Then rent a slip seeder to plant the grass. The seeder will pulverize the small clumps of dirt and put the seed in. A lot less steps and works great. Go to a local farm store to get the seed and fertilizer you need. Also talk to the rental guys about use of the slip seeder.

if you are planting a new lawn spraying would be no good

it would be in the ground when you sowed your grass seed

best way is to dig up weeds and rake level, make up a big

mix of sand and grass seed fertiliser and compost, water ground

well and spread and rake out level and put in canes with old

cds tide to them to scare birds away

If you use roundup, it will kill the weeds but will also kill everything else the spray comes in contact with so be very careful and cover up the good plants. It sounds like you really need to start from square one, kill everything, till, plant grass seed, etc. Good luck. This is a huge job but will be worth it: )

Just from reading the title I could take that weed and give you some grass for it sure I have to mow my lawn as long as it weighs over an ounce but I like smoking things that weigh like babies usually those 8-10 pounders reminds me of smoking with my 6 month old baby.
