Is there an easy way to dig up large sections of a garden?

I'm aware this is probably a daft question but...we're changing the layout of our garden, it's quite large and long and half is lawn and the other half is a wild mess. We're planning on digging up large sections to make the lawn an 'S' shape with a pond and flower beds.

The thing is, i know it's going to take some time, i'm not that daft ;) But between me at uni and mum at work, we don't have huge amounts of free time. So my question is, are there any time saving methods we can use that would be better than simply 'going at it hell for leather'?

some gardening centres in uk may have small excavators/dozers for hire which would let you get the back braking work done easier, quicker in a weekend then you can get on with the rest of the work at your Leisure, a weekend should do you to get the hard graft done with

Don't dig it up. You'll end up with areas that then start to sink again, and the new lawn won't be level enough for mowing. Hire an Industrial size strimmer, strim off all the weeds. Make sure you are wearing protective clothing, especially a face mask. Been there! done that! mouth full of slugs!

Next, break up the top couple of inches, just enough to be able to level it. Mix in some bone meal/ chicken manure if you wish. Tread it down evenly from one end to the next. Drench it. Then do the same again in a few days. Then either turf or seed. Turf is more expensive, but ensures you start without weeds.

A rotor-vator will do this kind of thing, there ones you sit on and ones that are hand held, like a metal detector which may be more suitable for making the ornate shapes you mention.

A tool hire place like HSS or Beaver will rent you one for as long as you need, and can advise the best one for the job, as well as how long you should require it.
