Question:
How do you kill a palmetto bush/plant other than digging it up?

We cleared a field for youth sports and every spring season I find another palmetto bush/plant coming up. I want to kill these things without digging up the good sod all around the new bush/plant each time.

I don't know where you live but this works in Texas. Spray diesel down the center of the plant. I use a regular insecticide type sprayer and put it as deep into the plant as I can. If the weather is hot it will pull out of the ground in a day or two. If it's cooler, will take longer. I learned this from a friend working on his property and it really works!

My friend's property is a grass farm. As long as you put the diesel down in the center of the plant itself, it only reacts with the plant. You certainly wouldn't want to do this before it rains. Then you would have to worry about contamination. Just in case, you might check with your County Extension Agent like others suggested.

Find the Master Gardener's or Extension Office office in your area and tell them your problem. There may be something you can spray that will kill the palmettos while the grass is dormant in the winter, or something that is specific for brush & trees that will not harm the grass. If nothing else, find a decent garden center, not a box store, and ask them for some help. If the palmettos are sprouting from seeds, then you can use a pre-emergent (found at garden centers and box stores) to stop the sprouting. I understand corn gluten is a pre-emergent also.

Do you REALLY want to put some petrol in a field where kids will be playing and falling and skinning knees? Besides, I think that qualifies is improper disposal and will get you in some trouble with the EPA and DHEC, or whatever you have there for a dept of health and environmental control. Not a good idea.

If nothing else, get the kids there to sweep the fields monthly and pull the young palmettoes before they get really established. They will feel more involved, and you might could make a contest of it.

I agree with flipper that this will work, but don't count on growing anything else there for awhile either. Not to mention that with rain or irrigation, there's a chance of the diesal leeching into the roots of the surrounding sod and damaging it anyway. If you peel back the sod from around the base of the plant and dig down with what's referred to as a sharp shooter (a long narrow blade shovel) you should be able to take op the root withou much damage. Just be sure to dig down to get all of the root. Refill the hole with dirt and you will be ready to replant.

Get a bottle of your favorite liquor, drink up some courage, then go in there with a rage and stomp the c**p out of it. If you can't work up the courage, get a homeless person or a bunch of teens to go in there and take care of it for $10 or $20 bucks.
