Buddleia and Sedum ‘brilliant’ will attract loads of varieties and even neglected areas covered with nettles will be a haven.

Some annuals to plant could be Dill Calendula Candytuft Cosmos Petunias, Nasturtium and Zinnias. Perennials could include: Achillea, Dianthus, Asters, Erigeron, Mints and Sedums. Shrubs that could be effective at attracting the butterfly other than Buddleia could include Potentillas, Spireas Weigela and Viburnums. The more types of planting mean that there are more chances of attracting a greater variety of butterflies.

You can also boost the population of butterflies by providing a good food source for caterpillars. Nettles, sweet rocket and garlic mustard are all ideal and most common species of butterfly will be happy to lay their eggs on these plants. Caterpillars will not cause noticeable damage but if you have problems with caterpillars eating the your cabbage leaves, take time to pick them off as opposed to spraying with pesticides.

Check with your local garden centre...I'm sure they would be informative too about what grows well locally

Everything depends on where you live. See if you have any nurserys in your area that say they have native plants and they should be able to give you some good ideas. Also see if you have any gardening clubs or flower clubs and give them a call. I've noticed here that when we have bird shows. . .here people come from all over the world to see all the birds that winter here because the northern birds come south and the southern birds come north. . .anyway there are usually native plant people at those shows and they are great about advising you about butterfly gardens. Also try the web to get an idea about what grows well in your area.

Pipe vine attracts pipe vine swallowtails. Milkweed will attract monarchs, especially tropical milkweed if you know how to grow it in a subtropical environment. But mostly, just look up what native flowering plants grow in your area. Those are the most likely to attract butterflies and humming birds. You could also try putting up a butterfly or humming bird feeder. Good luck!

firecracker plants attrack hummingbirds. Butterflies love chaya if you can find someone to give you a cutting (and the chaya is delicious too). They also love a plant called (of course) a butterfly bush :-)
