I have just purchased my first home! Yay! Now we've started fixing it up i've started to become bothered by the large tree in the 'mini' front garden. It looks completely out of place where it is and i'd like to find it a new home. But to remove it properly i need to find out what it is! To me it looks like ether a Palm tree or Yucca tree of some kind? It has the trunk of a Palm, rough flakey bark with hairy tuffs, the leaves are long and spikey single strands like a Yucca. The tree grows small white flowers in large clumps. If anyone could help i'd be very grateful :)

Your tree is definitely a Yucca, confirmed by your description of the flowers.

Moving it should not be a problem, and will probably be good for it, as it is growing at quite an angle.

Yuccas can also be cut off and replanted successfully, as long as they are well supported until they are firmly rooted.

Hope this helps.

yucca and agave are thoroughly various issues... yucca is its very own genus, so is agave. they are not the same in any respect. there is not any yucca palm...the failings human beings call yucca hands are truly Soaptree Yuccas, or "Our Lord's Candles." and those are not the same, or maybe close to a Joshua Tree. And a Century plant is Agave americana, not a yucca. yet definite, yuccas will flower.

congrats on the new home!

Yes that sounds like a Yucca tree, but the flowers don't sound right... i'd ask a neighbor, if you live out west, or maybe bring a picture to any gardening store

I don't think it's either. It looks like it could be an orchid of some kind (maybe cymbidium) but I've never seen one that big! Take some of the flowers to a nursery. They will be able to identify them I'm sure. Good Luck!

Look at the differences in these photos and you may be able to tell. If not try posting some photos of your tree so we can see it.

There are some labeled incorrectly such as the orchid labeled palm.
