I got accepted into college and the college is quite far from home and I'm looking to rent a place in the vicinity of the college. I found something that reads 'garden cottage' and i am wondering if there will be a main house in the same yard because of the word 'cottage' or is it on its own?

When the term " Cottage " is used to describe a house, it usually means a small dwelling. It does not mean there is another house on the property. When there is more than one building on the property, they use the term, "Guest House".

It's on it's own and maybe at one time had a main house.....thus the gardener's cottage. But when large estates were being broken up and the fields subdivided into small parcels, the term garden cottage came to mean a small house. They can be quite rustic to quite liveable, beware.

The way the term is used it could be either one. If alone then they maybe are imply it comes with a garden and perhaps no lawn. (Less work) It could also be as you infer that there is a main house but if that is the case it is usually called a gardeners cottage.

Here yes. It would be the small house away from the main house were your gardener lives or your outside help lived. Many are fixed up and rented out. Near the stables very often

No sense speculating. Make further inquiry and educate yourself with the facts. Vague suspicions settle nothing. It could be practically anything. It could be converted tourist cabins. It could be a cottage with a garden. Or, it could be a guest house on the same lot.

Probably a converted old shed made into a rental 'cabin', but this is fine, if it suits you. I've lived in things like that, when I was a youngster. It was an adventure! Something you'll look back on for the rest of your life!

Probably, but you can't be entirely sure without going to see, or calling or emailing and asking. I don't know why you would ask here instead of asking the people who are renting it. We can only guess. They know for sure.
