It seems that there name tells the story but everybody that i have asked about how to stop them crawling away at night don't seem to understand my problem. Am i doing something wrong to drive them away at night or should i cover them with small gauge net. On a large compost heap netting would be difficult.

AFRICAN night crawler worms are composting worms and but are suitable for composting in tropical areas.if not in tropical warm area that is the problem.

EUROPEAN night crawler worms are also used in composting.

CANADIAN night crawler worms are NOT a composting worm maybe just called night crawlers in the states.

IN Australia.we use the red wriggler worms for composting and we get and use the African night crawler worms to use as bait for fishing.from same suppliers.

Sounds like you got them mixed up and the composting worms ended up on the end of your fishing line.

EDIT if you had them in an enclosed container such as in a worm farm then would not escape i have seen a good set up in old concrete laundry troughs was eating up dog poop at a boarding kennels so if worked their with all that waste would work for any one,

Night crawlers aren't composting worms, they're soil worms, they live in burrows deep in the soil. For composting you need red composting worms, Eisenia foetida, also called red wriggler worms. Red wriggler worms are smaller, just 2-3", and they live on the surface of the ground, under piles of leaves, cow pies, flattened grass stalks--anywhere organic matter accumulates on the surface, red compost worms will migrate to it from the surrounding soil. If you put African night crawlers in a worm bin and sealed them so air could get in but they couldn't get out, they'd die in a few days, and stink to high heaven. If you put them in a compost pile, they'll burrow down into the soil under the pile.
