they are seed pods. altho it is a long process, you could let the pod dry thoroughly, open it, and you have seeds. the problem with growing new trees from the pods is that you will not necessarily get the same tree - it could produce a different color flower or different type flower - the surest way to propogate a desired flower type and color is to take cuttings instead. anyhow - those are seed pods.
