There's the cost of plants and seeds, fertilizer, equipment, pest control, etc...plus the constant labor. There will be loss to weather and insects(despite pest control) and some may spoil before you can eat it. Having a small garden may cost more than buying vegs. But there's the enjoyment of gardening and there's the superior taste of home grown. Also the joy of sharing your yield with others. I know my garden is costing me but I've been doing it every year for 36 years now -- go for it!

I guess the answer is "it depends". You spend time to keep the garden free of weeds and watered that's not figured into the equation. Also growing conditions in your area has a lot to do with your success. A company I work with provides vegetables plants and seeds for a plot that size for about $97 shipped to your door. If you take care of them, you can supply vegetables for a family of 4-6 for some time. Most people I know do it because it's a great excuse to go outside and vegetables grown in your backyard tend to taste better and there's a pride element that can't be beat.
Hope this helps!

a pound of tomatoes cost between 1.99 and 3.49 a pound. A pack of tomato seeds cost anywhere from 10 cents to 33 cents and you have about 100 to 150 seeds per packets. If you spend 5.50 for good quality of seeds and they usually have about 25 seeds per pack. each plant even if they produce 10 pounds of tomoatoes, that is not bad for about a dime.
