Bed bug infestation, who is responsible? Please help?

I was living in an apartment complex that had bed bugs and I was unaware of it. The infestation started in the apartment below us I was told. That apartment got sprayed for bugs and then they came up to my apartment. I was never told of the infestation or to keep an eye out for bugs, until it was too late. At first I thought I was allergic to the detergent i was using cause I thought I was breaking out in hives. I changed my bed sheets and detergent and the itchy didn't stop.

A month goes by and I happen to be talking to some other tenants in my building and they told me they had bed bugs and were treated for them already. I started looking around and found that my mattress had blood stains on it and i started seeing the bugs. My mattress had to be thrown out and they eventually spread throughout the apartment. We had to get rid of our two couches as well as my queen size mattress.

We got the complex to spray our apartment and the surrounding ones and we had to bag up all our stuff and take it to get cleaned. I ended up spending $30 at a laundromat plus the cost of the mattress and two couches we had to throw away. I slept on an air mattress and was still getting bit. They were supposed to spray 3 times but they only came twice and I was still finding the bugs; in my filing cabinet, dressers, walls, covers, etc.

We decided to break our lease because the problem was not being fixed, we also had roaches and a mice problem as well. Our apartment was not dirty and we cleaned a lot but the insects still came even after the treatments. They were in the walls and just moved from apartment to apartment. I spent 3 months with beg bug infestation, having to worry about having people over, going to others apartments, I didn't want them to spread. I always washed my clothes and sheets just to be safe but nothing worked.

Eventually we moved to a different complex, we had to wash every piece of fabric and check all the furniture. So that is where I am now, a different apartment complex and I've found 4 bugs already. I have gotten bit a few times and I found one in my clarinet case the other day. I have no idea how they traveled with us but they did. I don't know what to do because I don't know who is responsible. Are we going to get blamed for bringing them in, or is the old complex responsible for not getting rid of the problem. I don't want them to spread to other tenants apartments but I'm not sure if I should tell my new apartment complex or get a private exterminator. Any suggestions or stories would be greatly appreciated.

Bed bug infestation is rearing it's head again and chemically spraying is marginally effective as this method fails to kill the pests that have taken up residence in cracks and crevices of furniture, bedding and head boards. The most effective strategy is to isolate every piece of furniture and bedding in the infested area and encapsulate and treat the problem items with carbon dioxide It will kill all of the bed bugs and no further infestation provided you don't transport more from a furniture store. Make a written record of everything you saw, said and told the landlord. Write down everything the landlord says, does, in response or DOESN'T do.

Everything you complain about, send to him/her in writing via registered mail so they have to sign for it and keep the receipt.

Find out the laws in your state for recording conversations and record everything the landlord does.

Try to get testimony and signatures from the other tenants to prove you are not the only one afflicted and how long you all think this has been going on...how many years back can you trace it?

Don't listen to any pressure to fog/spray as pesticides DON'T WORK. Getting a specialist for Bed Bugs will help but it's only temporary. You know all that could be done has probably been done already and they are still there.

If you have to got to court, there will be no disputing your evidence as long as it is thorough and precise.

really you can't blame anyone but the bug. you most likely transported the bug yourself. eggs. they may have laid eggs on some peice of clothing that you thought was cleaned already. but all there is to say is. wherever you find them, be sure that they have laid some eggs there already. be cautious, bed bugs are among the worst bed problem in america. my aunt had an issue with them, and she decided enough was enough and just sanitized any place that she saw them. so be careful, you may be transporting them yourself. just think, eggs.

Your previous apartment complex is responsible for all your damages incurred there. Write them a certified letter stating what you lost with dollar figures. Then expect to take them to small claims court.

You have taken them with you to the new apartment. Notify the management immediately so they can take appropriate action, or better yet, hire your own exterminator for not just your apartment but the adjoining ones.
