Does anyone know where I can get some cheap but beautiful flowers. Lately I have been going to Walmart and picking up their $4 flowers and planting them 2 at a time, but I want more. Does anyone recommend a type of flower as well.

Where are you located? If you are in north/mid western MA or southern VT, southwestern NH go to yahoo groups to tradeperennials. I started a group because I got into to flowers, shrubs, herbs some years back & want everything! So I started this group & we have about 150 members. Folks meet individually & trade. New gardeners trade whatever they have - if not plants then something homemade, craft, recipe, manure, stones, bricks, mulch, canned goods, etc.

Also put a "wanted" on free cycle. Go to Yahool freecycle.org and it will come up with states then towns. There are many seasoned gardeners out there that are always thinning. Just make sure to look plants offered up on-line and/or get yourself a good perennial book because you want to know how it will spread, height, etc. Also go to your state site & search invasive plants to make sure you don't get & plant something that will take over.

As far as annuals there are many to grow from seed & some do re-seed themselves although some that re-seed colors break down. Join a gardening group on Yahoo & ask questions folks are happy to answer you. A local one is best - better if folks are in your area.

Many annuals as I said are nice my favorites are Zinnias which come in many colors & a bit different flower types. They are very easy to grow from seed and as long as you pick them they will go all summer. Also someone has just started a free cycle garden group that is like freecycle obviously but just for gardening. Or start a group in your area. Yahoo does promote it and you can make fliers & put up on boards. Then also people that are looking or offering flowers/plants send them a nice note with an invitation to check you group out. Also announce it on a regional site.

It is a perfect time to plant flowers from seed. The easy ones for annuals (they don't come up again next year) are nastursiums, sunflowers, climbing beans that have red flowers and you can eat the beans later. They are big seeds that don't blow away and they germinate quickly. Perennials that come up by themselves every year are carnations, dianthus, cosmos, forget-me-nots. If you are patient

hollyhocks grow in mild sunny location near fences or next to house

and are very tall. They do not bloom the first year because they take a while to germinate and grow. Start some Gerbera from seed. They spread year after year, different bright orange and yellow colors.

You will love the smell and look of purple lavender but they are best purchased as a small starter plant.

You should have mentioned what zone you're in ....that's very important. Canna lilies have a lot of POW for the plant...flower over most of the season, and multiply and come back bigger every year. Cosmos are flashy, and re-seed regularly. Geum is very tough, and comes back. Geraniums are great. Red aloe is fantastic, and a great draw for hummingbirds, and hardy in zones 8-9. Butterfly bush makes a BIG statement, as do Hybiscus / Rose of Sharon. There are soooo many. Why not love them all, and trade seeds and cuttings thru garden clubs like "DavesGarden.com" or your local garden club?

I love flowers that self sow, such as the beautiful cosmos. They come in shades of white, light pink ,dark pink, and pale mauve. Each fall the wind blows the seeds around and you will find the beautiful plants all over in the Spring. I give a lot away and transplant them all over my yard to fill in gaps and have lots of color. Another self sowing plant is wild flocks, which also comes in many colors and I find it all over in the Spring. You can't get any cheaper than that. You plant one or two plants in the summer and they will multiple each year. The best thing about the wild flocks is they don't cost a thing, just look in the fields....so many colors!!!

1.Go to freecycle.org in your area. Generally freecycle groups are listed by State, County, then City. We give away flowers or flower starts in the 2 groups I'm involved in frequently. Everything in freecycle is free to the giver and taker.

2.Also, in our area, Lowes is often more inexpensive than Wal-Mart for marked down flowers. Sometimes you have to ask where the mark down rack is though. 3. If you have Mennonites or Amish nearby, their plants are really nice, organically grown and inexpensive as well.

Irises and lilies are beautiful and they come back every spring.

I really like the dwarf Irises. They come in a lot of colors.Tulips and

Peonies are very good too. They all are perennials and multiply

quickly. They are cheap and you get your money`s worth.
